Self-Care and Overall Wellness Tips for Individuals Living with Cancer

Self-care isn’t always easily defined; for many people, it’s simply a way to describe taking care of the body and mind in a healthy way. Eating right, getting enough exercise each day, and reducing stress, anxiety, and the symptoms of depression all count as self-care, and these activities are essential for individuals who are living with cancer. Not only will they help you feel better, but they can also improve your quality of life and allow you to move forward during a particularly difficult time. But how do you get started?

Creating a plan of action requires you to think about your needs now and in the future. Now is the time to focus on yourself, which can be difficult if you’re busy or experiencing an overload of emotions. Living with cancer can be a very emotional thing, and it can be draining. You may not feel you have the energy to put into your wellness, but there are actually some very easy things you can do to feel good, starting with the following key elements.

Finding the Right Multivitamin

If you’re not taking a multivitamin, talk to your doctor about which kind is best for your specific needs. You might be surprised by the options on the market these days. Many people believe that if they eat healthily they don’t need a multivitamin, but there are several reasons to supplement your diet. Not only do they provide essential nutrients that might be lacking in your food, but they also boost your immune system and help your gut microbiome stay healthy and active.

Changing Your Diet

It’s not enough to eat healthy foods; you also have to think about how much water you’re drinking, how much processed food is making its way into your kitchen, and how much refined sugar you’re eating. Whole grains, fruit, nuts, fresh vegetables, and lean proteins such as chicken and fish will help to boost your energy and can prevent inflammation, as well as help with aches and pains. Think about how you can change unhealthy items, such as switching butter out for olive oil, and learn how to read food labels. If you’re in a major metropolitan area, there’s a good chance retailers like Costco can deliver fresh food to your doorstep, so you’ll always have access to fresh fruit and vegetables.

Processing Your Feelings

Living with a disease like cancer can take a huge emotional toll, and it’s important to process your feelings about it over time. You may go through the stages of grief, or you may feel stuck inside one particular emotion for a long time. You might feel that stress or anxiety are amplified too, which can be extremely draining. Talking to a therapist or counselor, writing in a journal, or practicing a soothing activity such as yoga/meditation can help you cope with your feelings and get through them so you can focus on your wellness.

Getting Away

If your energy levels are good and your immune system is in good shape, consider getting away from everything for a bit. Take a short road trip, or book a vacation with your closest loved ones. If you don’t have time to get away for more than a day, drive to your favorite local spot. It can relieve stress, boost your mental health, and help you find a little peace in this busy world. Talk to your doctor to make sure you’re up to it, and take it easy so you can enjoy your time away.

Self-care incorporates many different things, and it’s a very personal decision, so keep in mind that what works for one person may not work for you. Stay in close contact with your doctor so you can ensure your plan suits your specific needs, and remember to make time to focus on yourself no matter what else is going on in your life.
